   Proposal Description:
   Diabetes has been reported to increase the risk for Alzheimer???s disease   (AD), however, the use of insulin and other diabetes medications may protect against the progression of AD.  It has also been reported that individuals  taking insulin have reduced AD-related pathology at autopsy and less cognitive    decline.  There are various types of drugs used in the treatment of diabetes,   and each acts upon a different biological pathway.  It is unclear whether   different classes of diabetes medications have a differential impact on the  underlying neuropathology and rates of cognitive decline related to the           proliferation of AD.  Ascertaining information about how diabetes medications  impact the brain may provide important clues about the physiological mechanisms underlying AD pathology.                                                            Aim: Investigate the association of different types of diabetes medications on neuropathological findings on brain autopsies and rates of cognitive decline in AD individuals with diabetes compared to AD individuals with no history of diabetes.
